I was always under the impression that style should come natural. When I started working full time, making money and being able to shop, I thought all I needed was the clothes. I don't believe that anymore. Style takes effort; blood, sweat & tears! This is why I feel everyone should take the time to plan their outfits. Don't just think you're going to wake up in the morning with a closet full of clothes and know exactly what to wear. Girl, you need to put in that work! But, before you get straight to the planning, there's some steps you need to take.
Start by Pinning
We all need a little inspiration. Pinterest boards are this digital age's mood boards. If you're a novice start off by pinning street style looks. Follow pinners like WhoWhatWear and, POPSUGAR Fashion, for loads of inspiration. If you know your way around the fashion world, kick it up a notch by keeping it traditional. Pin editorials & runway looks like you would if you were making an actual mood board.
Still not sure how to do this? check out some of the boards I've created for my clients here.
Make a List & Shop
Take a look at your closet and think about what you're missing. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do if you truly have nothing to wear. Make a list of what you need and shop those items. Firstly, stock up on your basics ( white tees, white button downs, dark denim jeans, etc.) Secondly, build on the fun stuff (trendy tops, fun dresses, and bright colors). Lastly, stock up on all types of accessories, from the basic black clutch to a super fun fringe bag, make sure you've got enough of both.
** Golden Rule: Use your Pinterest board, the items on there are what you want to wear, so make sure they're on your list. **
Now that all the hard work is over this is where the fun begins, the planning! Think about what you've got going on for the week. Think about what the temperature will be like. Then start creating head to toe looks. Use your pinterest board to style some outfits, but also create something original. If it works, you'll know it works because you'll look at yourself in the mirror and think damn I look good. Once you've created your first outfit, snap a picture, put the clothes away and move on to number two. Before you know it you'll have a full five days of outfits planned for the work week.
